IEP’s Made Simple

Who Gets an IEP?

Let’s start with the basics: if your child has a disability that impacts learning in the general education setting (like autism, speech delays, learning differences, or more) they may qualify for an IEP. The process begins with a thorough evaluation so the school team can see what kind of support would be a good fit for your kiddo.

What’s the IEP Meeting All About?

Picture the IEP meeting as a team brainstorm for your child’s success. You’ll talk through:

  • Present Levels of Academic Achievement and Functional Performance (PLAAFP): this is your chance to share what your child is doing well and where they need support.

  • SMART goals: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound.

  • Services, supports, and accommodations tailored to your child.

  • And in Minnesota, by grade 9 (or age 14), the IEP should also include transition planning, getting ready for life after high school.

Should You Sign the IEP Right Away?

Not necessarily. You’re entitled to take some time to review it. If something doesn’t feel right, speak up. You can request changes, refuse parts, or even pursue mediation if needed.

When Things Don’t Go as Planned

If the school isn’t delivering services as written in the IEP, keep a log of what's happening. Then call a meeting, evidence is your superpower. Plus, you can always request a new IEP meeting, even outside the annual timeline.

You Don’t Have to Go It Alone

  • Ask for the changes your child needs (more OT, speech, or classroom supports) and document your request.

  • Get support from local resources, like:

    • The Arc Minnesota

    • PACER Center

    • Minnesota Disability Law Center

These groups are fantastic for guidance, advocacy, and even attending meetings with you.

Pro Tips for the IEP Meeting

  • Arrive with your questions, notes, and confidence.

  • If possible, bring your child, their voice matters!

  • Remember: the IEP is a living document. It can evolve as your child grows.

  • Stay connected, stay proactive and believe in your champion powers. You’ve got this.

Let’s make this school year that much better, one meeting at a time.
